It was founded by Mel and Patricia Ziegler in 1978 as a travel-themed clothing company; it has subsequently largely eliminated this tropical or travel-related theme. The earliest fragrance  edition created in 1995 and the newest ones is from 2009. Banana Republic fragrances were made in collaboration with perfumers Honorine Blanc, Harry Fremont, Beatrice Piquet, Laurent Le Guernec, Pascal Gaurin and Marc Chaillant.
